Where has it all gone wrong for Holland at Euro 2012?

Holland face Portugal this evening needing a victory to progress into the quarter-finals of the European Championships.

They also need Germany to beat Denmark if they have any hope of progressing. It’s all a far cry from the Oranje being one of the favourites for tournament prior to the event kicking-off.

Home

Portugal also need a victory to ensure they progress to the quarter-finals, although a draw could be enough if Germany beat Denmark.

Everything points to Holland heading home unexpectedly early. It would be a terrible end to the tournament for the Dutch and their star-studded squad.

When the tournament started it seemed unlikely that Holland would go home early but it seemed likely that they may have had to get a result…

Football Manager 2021: How Cherno Samba, Freddy Adu and other legends of the game fared in real life

It s Football Manager 2021 release day, which means partners of fans of the addictive simulation sensation may not see much of their significant others for the foreseeable future.

A game with roots dating back to the early 90s, Football Manager has become a phenomenon with players enamoured by the challenge of signing wonderkids from South America or leading a team from non-league to Champions League glory.

Indeed, many footballers have become famous in their own right not necessarily for their performances on the pitch but for their rise to prominence from boy wonder to global superstar in the world of Football Manager.

Norway-Scotland: Strachan’s men aiming to end 2013 with victory

Scotland and Norway will both look to end a transitional year on a high when they meet in Molde on Tuesday.

The two go head to head in a friendly with one eye on building for the future, after both sides fell some way short of qualification for the World Cup in Brazil.

Scotland, who drew 0-0 with the United States on Friday, finished fourth in Group A, six points behind runners-up Croatia and 15 adrift of runaway group winners Belgium.

But they have begun to rebuild under boss Gordon Strachan, whose arrival has inspired something of an upturn in fortunes.

Strachan took over from Craig Levein in January and after a tricky start, which included defeats at home to Wales and away to Serbia, the Scots have impressed more recently, earning wins over Macedonia…

Xavi puts Barca back to the top – A 2022/23 La Liga season review

Despite failures in Europe and in the Copa del Rey, Barcelona have returned to the top of Spanish football by winning the 2022/23 La Liga title.

Barcelona are back, but not quite

The Catalans finished the campaign with 88 points, 10 more than arch-rivals Real Madrid and 11 more than third-place Atletico Madrid. It took four years, a period riddled with all sorts of problems on and off the pitch, mostly financial.

The club have frequently been forced to part ways with major earners in their squad to cut down on salary expenses, as well as to offer those who were planned for new contracts salary deductions too. It was obviously very painful for everyone connected with club when they failed to put together a viable solution for Lionel Messi to remain at the club two years…

Ralf-shaped universe takes shape as Manchester United find togetherness

With 62 minutes gone at the Brentford Community Stadium something startling happened.

Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United – this collection of jumbled limbs, soldered and bolted together on its gurney – sprung unexpectedly to its feet, arms raised towards the light.

United were already 1-0 up at the time. The first half had belonged to Brentford, United producing periods of slow possession interspersed with spasms of intensity where the players seemed to be trying to execute the Rangnick press and pass, but dished up instead a flurry of disconnected energy, like a pigeon trapped in the eaves.

Guardiola expects De Bruyne to be ‘out for a few weeks’ after injury blow

Manchester City have suffered a considerable blow after Pep Guardiola said Kevin De Bruyne will be “out for a few weeks” because of the hamstring injury he suffered in their 3-0 win at Burnley.

The Belgian was forced off after only 24 minutes at Turf Moor and the problem is a particular concern for City as it is a recurrence of the same one that led to his replacement in the opening half of June’s victorious Champions League final against Internazionale.
